Through case studies global challenges are related to local and regional sustainability challenges. Students deepen their understanding of global challenges, such as climate change, and the different dimensions of sustainable development. They are familiar with various efforts to deal with sustainability challenges, including the UN sustainable development goals. As states cannot provide for a sustainable future of their citizens on their own, they are increasingly forced into a logic of sustainability for all people and responsibility for the global commons. This new logic is grounded on the scientific truth of planetary boundaries as well as on ethical requirements (e.g., caring for the Earth). To address these challenges and to position for global sustainable development after 2015, a strengthened global development agenda will have to facilitate transforma-tion in the way goods and services are produced, in the way jobs are created, in global consumption patterns, in the management of natural resources, and in the mechanisms Global Challenges - Sustainable Futures.
